British Indian Army soldier giving a 'V' for victory sign as he leans from a porthole of a ship arriving at Singapore during World War II. Hundreds of thousands of troops of the British Indian Army fought for the British Empire during the Second World War. The British Indian Army expanded from 200,000 to over million by the end of the war. Most of the troops fought in Malaya and Burma, suffering defeats but ultimately winning the war over the Japanese. Some 87,000 troops died, nearly 35,000 were wounded, and nearly 68,000 became prisoners of war. This official British war photograph dates from 1941 or 1942.
