July 1932, America's Coney Island Amusement centre was destroyed by fire , stranding 30,000 bathers (foreground). 5000 people became homeless. The six hour battle with flames destroying four blocks on Boardwalk causing "$5,000,000 worth of damage was watched by huge crowds as 35 fire engine companies arrived to fight the blaze in 40 mph winds. Many fires large and small have broken out between 1893 and 2010.
