General caption: No factor has been more important in the development of Shelby County, and Irwin than the remarkable adaption of the corn-livestock economy to the physical resources upon which the county and community are built. The economy has been only slightly modified since it was established, and the important crops of 1870 are the important crops of 1941. Farm land is used mainly for grain crops, with corn predominating. Thirty-three percent of land in crops in 1935 was in corn, 16 percent in oats, and 9 percent in hay. These three plus land in pasture constitute 87 percent of the farm land. Detailed description: These pictures show how people in this locality preserve the fertility of their land. [This image shows] shows farmer plowing fallow land. ...[This image shows] a manure spreader being loaded and operated. This last is not a usual or necessary practice, and no farmer has enough barnyard manure for all his tillage. This operator, however, puts all he has on the land and believes that it is worth his while to do so, since it acts to make a good crop better.
