PLYMOUTH PILOT - ONCE BLINDED NOW LEADS TYPHOON SQUADRON - A Plymouth pilot - Squadron Leader Holmes, DFC - was blind for three weeks after being hit by flak. Today he leads one of Fighter Command's squadrons operating from a frontline station. He was previously a Blenheim pilot, and was in operation over France a few days after the outbreak of war. He was blinded while on a flight over the Maastricht to discover if the bridges had been blown up, during the German break through the Low Countries. One bridge was still intact, and in use by the enemy. While about to radio this information to his base his Blenheim was hit, his radio smashed, and he was practically blinded. However, he managed to crash-land and telephone the information. Two days later he was completely blind - his sight was lost for three weeks. For his exploit over Maastricht he won the In Typhoon attacks on targets in France. Belgium and Holland, and in the English Channel, he has made 20 bombing and 50 fighter sorties.
