He was educated at Market Bosworth Grammar School, and then Upper Canada College, Toronto. Lieut Goddard was at Norway in HMS FURIOUS, on ARK ROYAL for 20 months, took part in the attack on the BISMARCK, has escorted Malta convoys, done fighter patrols over France (in Fairey Swordfish) during the Battle of Britain, and took part in the first aerial attack in history from FURIOUS, against enemy destroyers in Narvik
