The larger cities all havecomfortable hotels; and, if you can afford tostay a month in Ponce, Mayaguez, and SanJuan, you will bring back fragrant memoriesthat will last you many years, or else youwill send for your household gods and notcome back at all. And, if you don*t ride abicycle, you will be able to get just as muchpleasure from the toy railroad or wee horseswhen you travel about from place to place,while the expense in either case will be mar-vellously small. 5^ >. CHAPTER IV The Second Day Begins We march to San German — Removal of the sickfrom the ambulances — An approaching Spanish force— Our scouts and their leader— Concerning SenorFijardo — Visible effects of imminent battle — Some-thing about the town of San German. AT eight oclock in the morning on theloth of August General Schwansbrigade broke camp at SabanaGrande, and moved out on the road toSan German. The order of march differedfrom that of the day before only in thepresence of the troop of cavalry; and, thecommand being well rested, such progresswas made that the advance-guard reachedthe western side of San German by noon —a good ten miles. The main body haltedat the same hour just outside the easternentrance to the town, preparing a makeshiftmeal; and at this point the sick, both on39 40 YAUCO TO LAS MARIAS their own account and to make room in thealready crowde
