Sumela Monastery is one of the most impressive sights in the whole Black Sea region ("Karadeniz" in turkish, also known as "Pontus) region, and a great pilgrimage for all Pontic-Greeks. Nowadays is a museum. Located in the heart of the national park of Altindere valley, close to Macka town, Trabzon province, Turkey. Sumela Monastery (called by the locals "Meryemana") was for centuries, since the byzantine years and until 1922, when the exchange of populations, between Greece and Turkey took place, the most important Greek-Orthodox monastery in the whole Black Sea region. Nowadays it's a museum.
