A man employed in one of the railwayoffices in Washington has for years beencollecting newspaper accounts of railwayaccidents of all kinds. He now hasthousands of these narratives and from anattentive study of them he has come tothe conclusion that no locomotive en-gineer ever came alive out of his thirddisaster. This is all nonsense, of course, but there may be a basis of truth in thecalculations. It seems that this belief is widely heldby engineers themselves, and the maker. ■ EiigintsrinQ ADJUSTER FOR ENGINE-TRUCK CELLAR. The cellar side of the box is seen to betight by this construction, and the brassis just as well taken care of by a ^4-inchbrass plate which covers the gap left bythe two-point journal bearing; this plateis secured to the box by two J4-inch studs, and fits the journal, extending down at thesides so as to cover the top of the cellar, and thus make a continuous fit around thejournal on the inner or exposed side ofthe box. The outside surface being incontact with the wheel hub, is not pro-vided with any plate. There is in thecellar a rib at the center, which reachesup to the journal and divides the packingspace into two equal parts, parallel withthe journal, with the object of preventingthe bunching of the waste. It may beargued that this construction is expensive:but when put in the balance against hotboxes and prematurely worn-out jour- of the scra
