Series of 3-D images of the skull of an infant showing an abnormality in the knitting of the bones. The images are computer reconstructions of a series of conventional computed tomography (CT) scans that were used in planning & simulating the necessary corrective surgery. In a normal infant, vertical grooves in the skull (the cranial sutures) remain open, allowing it to expand & accommodate a growing brain. A normal, open suture is visible in the left-side view at bottom- right; opposite at bottom-left, the right-side view shows a closed suture, forcing expansion to the left. To correct the uneven growth, the surgeon had to re- open this closed suture.
