King Charles V (1500-1558) was Holy Roman Emperor and Archduke of Austria from 1519 to 1556, King of Spain (Castile and Aragon) from 1516 to 1556, and Lord of the Netherlands as titular Duke of Burgundy from 1506 to 1555. In 1552 Protestant princes, in alliance with Henry II of France, rebelled again and the second Schmalkaldic War began. Charles V was forced to flee the city, escaping across the Mountaind and barely made it alive to Villach in a state of semi-consciousness carried in a litter.
