Railway mechanical engineer . these valves varj-ing amountsof coal may be discharged to different portions of the grateso as to maintain an even and uniform depth of fuel control valves are placed in a convenient position on theboiler front where they may be readily reached by thefireman. The driving of the stoker is effected by means of a two-cylinder, double-acting, slow-moving engine and the amountof coal discharged by the stoker is controlled by var\ing thespeed of the engine. During normal operation and whennormal run of mine coal is being fed, this engine runs alongwith very low cylinder pressure, the throttle valve being onlyslightly open. If an unusually large or hard lump of coalreaches the crusher plate, the speed of the engine will bechecked and the pressure in the cylinders will rapidly rise such that all parts have sufficient strength to permit theengine to be abruptly stopped when running at delivery speedwithout anything giving away. The design of the engine, as will be noted from the illus-. Flg. 3—The Vertical Housing Is Carefully Designed to PreventCoal Dust or Water from Reaching the Bearings trations, is extremely simple and rugged. The crank shaft, connecting rods, cross-heads and valve gear are all enclosed N0\-EMBER, 1922 RAILWAY MECHANICAL EXGINEER 66l in a box casting, the cover of which is made of sheet metalfor easy removal to provide accessibility. With the exceptionof the c\linder5, all working parts are lubricated by splashlubrication. The box and the cover are of such a design asto avoid loss of oil and to prevent admission of dust to theenclosed box itself. The valves of the engine are of the piston tjpe, each drivenby a single eccentric. It is necessar} in any stoker to be
