Cornelius Valerius (1512-1578), Dutch humanist. Valrius was born at Utrecht. He studied at Louvain and became professor of Latin at Utrecht and Louvain. He was renowned for his abilities in rhetoric and ethics. He employed his skills in logic to oppose the popular Aristotelian cosmology with its aether and celestial spheres, instead supporting the Mosaic cosmology founded on the interpretation of the Bible. This woodcut illustration comes from van Opmeer's Opus chronographicum orbis universi published at Antwerp in 1611.
