Menorah, the seven-armed Jewish lamp and its shadow on a grave at Monumental Cemetery in Milan, Italy

The Menorah is a seven-armed oil lamp that in ancient times was lit inside the Temple of Jerusalem through the burning of consecrated oil. The original design, shape, measurements, materials and other specifications can be found in the Torah, in the biblical book of Exodus. It is one of the oldest symbols of the Jewish religion. According to some traditions the Menorah symbolizes the burning bramble in which the voice of God on Mount Horeb appeared to Moses, according to others it represents the Sabbath (in the center) and the six days of creation. The Monumental Cemetery of Milan, Italy, had a long and troubled gestation that began in 1837 at the request of the Austrian administration of the Lombardy-Venetia Kingdom to replace six pre-existing cemeteries destined for closure and disposal. The winner of the final competition announced by the City of Milan was the architect Carlo Maciachini (1818-1899); the co-building of the cemetery according to his project began in 1864. The architectural style adopted is eclectic but with Byzantine, Gothic and Romanesque references.
