Tian Chi or ‘Heaven Lake’ is 110km east of Urumqi. The long, blue lake is at an altitude of 2,000m and lies in the lee of permanently snow-capped Bogda Feng, ‘The Peak of God’, at 5,445m the highest mountain in the eastern Tian Shan. During the summer months Kazakh yurts cluster by the lake shore. In winter even the hardy Kazakhs move down to lower pastures.
