Sculpted wooden windows surmounted by horseshoe arches light the polygonal choir of the église Saint-Nicolas, the restored 16th and 17th century village church at Outines, in the Pays du Der area of the Marne in Grand Est, France. The building is the largest and most monumental of all the historic half-timbered or timber-framed churches in the Champagne region, with massive oak pillars and beams supporting its re-tiled red roof and wooden shingles cladding its slender spire.
Outines, Marne, Grand Est, France: ancient wooden windows with horseshoe-shaped apertures at the top pierce the oak-timbered walls of the 16th and 17th century église Saint-Nicolas, the largest and most monumental of all the historic half-timbered or timber-framed churches in the Champagne region. The church's design was modelled on medieval great halls and its oldest timbers have been dated to the year 1512. Inside, massive oak pillars, braces and beams support the impressive structure, with the red-tiled roof above them replaced in 2005. Substantial renovation work had previously been undertaken between 1980 and 1986. The church at Outines is among the attractions on the "Route des églises à pans de bois", a signposted tour of 15 villages in the peaceful Pays du Der countryside near the Lac du Der, all with timber-framed churches, chapels, houses and farms. The religious buildings were constructed between the late-1400s and the 18th century.
