Here the grain seed is collected in sacks (left), with stalks and husks exiting the machine, either blown out into the air or the heavier waste material falling to the ground.

Before these machines were developed, threshing was done by hand with flails. Mechanisation removed a substantial amount of labour costs. The first threshing machine was invented by the Scottish engineer Andrew Meikle. Ransomes, Sims and Jefferies Limited was a major British agricultural machinery maker also producing a wide range of general engineering products at their Orwell Works, Ipswich, Suffolk, England, UK from 1845. They manufactured aeroplanes during the First World War.
