Checkerboard Mesa in snow in Zion National Park.
A unique geological feature, Zion's Checkerboard Mesa features vertical and horizontal fissures along the entire north side of the mesa, creating the checkerboard effect. A hike up the mesa is an exciting journey filled with breathtaking scenery and solitary panoramas. Trails ascend the steep slope on the left side of the canyon, winding through the trees and undergrowth. Although the trail is steep, it is relatively safe. Atop the northernmost end of the plateau, enjoy the best views as well as a picnic area for a well-deserved rest.
