In the daylight hours he is to be found almost continuously in the midst of his flowers on the north side, and only in the evening, except on special occasions, does he emerge from the foliage and appear at his .store on Third avenue. Mr. Strohmeier is not only a dealer in flowers, but is a thorough student of them. It is to this fact that his success in becoming a large flower grower and dealer is attributed. When he came to Aberdeen in 1891 others were trying to grow flowers for commercial purposes here, but were failing. Mr. Strohmeier tried it with no better success. He became convinced that the presence of alkali in the artesian water was the cause of the failure. Then came a search for a vein of water which would not be so affected. It was not until four years ago that such a find was made. At that time on his property on the north side Mr. Strohmeier sunk a well and struck water from a sand vein. This water seems to be just the thing for the plants and since this find the business has thrived. The Week at Peaceful VaUey. Right on the eve of battle, and our preparations are nearly completed. Christmas plants are all brought to the front, wreaths and roping made up, all the requisites of crepe paper, rib- bon, pot covers, etc., on hand, and, with favorable weather, we think the Peaceful Valley troops will give a good account of themselves. A few advance shots have already been fired and the engagement will become general in a day or two. It is early to toll what will be the favorites in plants this year, but the few advance orders are a little sur- prising in that the call seems to be for light colors and white. Our first rhristmas sale was a white azalea, fol- lowed by several more white and pink. Mardner and the little Firefly azaleas will, no doubt, clean up, but have not moved very fast yet. Lorraine
