The M17 is a striker-fired, semi-automatic, 9-mm pistol and the predecessor of the M18 Modular Handgun System. The M18 is projected to replace all other pistols in the Marine Corps inventory, including the M9, by the end of fiscal year 2022. This is the first time, since 1985, that the Marine Corps is fielding a new service-wide pistol replacement. The Department of Defense, through the Northern Command, and in support of the Department of Homeland Security, is providing transportation, temporary housing, medical screening, and general support for at least 50,000 Afghan evacuees at suitable facilities, in permanent or temporary structures, as quickly as possible.
