Polarised light micrograph of a section of the rhizome of Dryopteris filix-mas commonly known as the European aspidium or male fern. Once referred to as the worm fern as the dried rhizomes and stipes were used to treat tapeworm infestations. It is however highly toxic. Magnification: x27 at 10cm wide.
