DISEASES or THE KIDNEYS. 415 Treatment.—Give a pint of linseed oil or eight drachms ofaloes. Warm fomentations, succeeded by mild mustard applica-tions, should be used over the loins. One to two drachms of thetartar of antimony may be given. If the suppression continuesfor several days, or if at any time the urasmic intoxication is ap-parent, the secretion of urine must be excited. To do this digi-talis, in the form of a decoction, should be repeatedly applied tothe skin. It must be discontinued as soon as the kidneys have. This is an abnormal enlargement of one or both kidneys. Thecondition may exist for. some time without presenting any signof disease. The condition may be easily detected by placing thehand well up in the rectum. A case is on record in which thekidney weighed fifty pounds, and Percival mentions a case inwhich the kidney weighed upwards of one hundred and twelve. Treatment.—Such cases cannot be benefited very much, stillthe carbonate of soda may be tried, in two-drachm doses threetimes a day. 416 THE STOCK OWXEes ADVISEE. ATROPHY OF THE KIDNEY.
