Lupins at Lake Tekapo, South Island, New Zealand. the lupin ( Lupinus polyphyllus) is a non-native species, originally introduced into the high country of Otago and Mackenzie by Connie Scott, who scattered the seed along roadsides in an attempt to make the bleak landscape more beautiful. It is invasive and controversial, on the one hand promoted as a fodder crop for sheep, on the other, decried as an environmental weed with an adverse effect on birdlife and fragile ecosystems.
