A section of the via Traiana Roman road at Egnazia, Apulia (Puglia), Italy

Apulia, or Puglia is a region of Southern Italy bordering the Adriatic Sea in the east, the Ionian Sea to the southeast, and the Strait of Òtranto and Gulf of Taranto in the south. Its southernmost portion, known as Salento peninsula, forms the "heel" of the "boot" of Italy. It is one of the richest archaeological regions in Italy having been variously settled by Ancient Greeks, Romans, Goths, Lombards, Byzantines, Saracens, Normans, Spanish, Turks, Venetians and French.
