Original WW1 era studio postcard of attractive Land Girl in the Women's Land Army (WLA) wearing breeches, jacket and hat holding a bread basket, involved in harvesting wheat, agricultural section of WLA, dated August 1918 on the reverse,

In January 1917, with British people faced with starvation, the Ministry of Agriculture began to recruit a Women's Land Army - The girls served in on of 3 sections: Agriculture, Timber cutting and Forage. To enrol in the Agriculture section, recruits had to sign up for 6 months - they worked tending sheep, ploughing, harvesting, potato picking or in market gardening. This photo looks like a Land Girl who may have been bringing in the harvest at the time the photo was taken (August 1918) and the bread basket was a studio prop. ("dog days" is written in pencil on the reverse) She is wearing smarter than usual Land girl clothes, perhaps provided by the studio - the tweed jacket, breeches and cap do not fit her. Despite looking at many images of land girls, this outfit is not seen - it could be an idealised view of a land girl's attire which is different from the usual smock and breeches worn by Land Girls (see Alamy image ref: 2D96WXW for the typical uniform). This studio portrait was taken in August 1918 as written on the reverse. See Alamy ref: See Alamy ref: 2D97WH1 for another portrait of this young woman in the studio.
