Located in West Potomac Park, near the Tidal Basin, this monument was dedicated in 1912 to honor the man often referred to as the "Father of the American Navy." The centerpiece of the memorial is a 10-foot bronze statue of John Paul Jones, sculpted by Charles Henry Niehaus. The statue's dynamic stance and detailed craftsmanship capture the energy and determination associated with Jones' character. The bronze figure stands atop a 15-foot marble pedestal, which is adorned with bronze bas-reliefs on all four sides. These intricate panels depict significant scenes from Jones' naval career, including his famous victory over the British ship Serapis while commanding the Bonhomme Richard. The pedestal also features inscriptions of Jones' most famous quote: "I have not yet begun to fight!" Surrounding the statue and pedestal is a circular basin with fountains, adding a sense of maritime ambiance to the memorial. The use of water in the design not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also symbolically connects the landlocked monument to the naval theme it represents. The memorial's location in West Potomac Park places it within view of the Potomac River, creating a thematic link between the monument and the water that was so central to Jones' life and career. During the spring, the memorial is framed by the famous cherry blossoms that line the Tidal Basin, creating a picturesque scene that draws many visitors.
