Named after philanthropist Enid Annenberg Haupt, who funded its construction, the garden was dedicated in 1987. It sits atop the underground complex housing the National Museum of African Art, the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, and the S. Dillon Ripley Center. The garden's design incorporates elements from various cultures and historical periods, reflecting the diversity of the Smithsonian's collections. Its centerpiece is a formal parterre in the Victorian style, complementing the Gothic Revival architecture of the Smithsonian Castle. Saucer magnolias (Magnolia x soulangeana), known for their large, showy flowers that bloom in early spring, are among the garden's notable features. These deciduous trees produce goblet-shaped flowers in shades of pink and white, creating a striking display against the Castle's red brick facade. The Haupt Garden also includes the Moongate Garden, inspired by Chinese architectural and horticultural traditions, and the Fountain Garden, which draws from the Islamic gardens of Spain.
