The work of collecting data was begunsome years before his death in 1908. After the manu-script was prepared, in large part, he came here fromWashington and met with a committee, and the wholework was gone over very carefully and found to be infull accord with his views as well as the views of the restof the committee. It has been the aim of the author to produce an authenticrecord free from all exaggeration, and to produce as com-plete a roster of the officers and men as possible. Thetask has been a difficult one. The author feels that hiswork is imperfect. There will, no doubt, be errors
