The volcano Helgafell seen from the summit of Eldfell (which erupted in 1973), Heimaey, Vestmannaeyjar Islands, southern Iceland

The eruption of Eldfell lasted nearly 5 months and nearly destroyed the town. Almost all the inhabitants were evacuated on the night of 23 January. The line of the Reykjanes Ridge, part of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, is clearly indicated by the line of volcanic islands in the distance.
