During thegreat gold excitement in New Zealand,in 1861, he went to that country, wherehe remained about nine years, followingmining, boat building, contracting,merchandising, etc. He also spentmuch of his time prospecting for gold,with considerable success. In 1870 hestarted for Europe via America, but onreaching the Hawaiian Islands he re-mained at Honolulu about a year,wherehe experienced a severe earthquake. Hethen went to California, whence hestarted overland for Europe, but onreaching Utah he decided to remainthere. Consequently he located in SaltLake City, where he engaged in busi-ness and became part proprietor of theValley House. At first he only paidslight attention tQ religious but became a prominent member of theFreemasons, the Odd Fellows and theKnights of Up to this timehe had been a man of the world andwas considered by his companions areal good fellow. But some timeduring the year 1878 he had a dream,in which he saw one of his childrendestroyed. The same night he passed 820 LATTER-DAY SAINT into a trance, during which his spirit fed for three weeks by an infidel. Heleft the body, and he was privileged to also held a prolonged discussion withbehold many marvelous things, partic- a Lutheran priest. Meanwhile he jour- ularly the punishment of the his children were all well at the time, 36 hours later his eldest child was a corpse, in fulfilment of his dream.
