Astronaut on space shuttle Atlantis. Astronaut Megan McArthur with a lithium hydroxide canister on board the space shuttle Atlantis. Lithium hydroxide is used to remove exhaled carbon dioxide from the air. This space shuttle mission, STS-125, was the fifth and final servicing mission to the HST. Two new instruments were added to the telescope, the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph and the Wide Field Camera 3. Maintenance performed during the mission, including the addition of new insulation and replacing gyroscopes, will allow the telescope to function until at least 2014. Photograph taken on 19 May 2009, flight day 9 of the mission.
