Thir-teen Archbishops, sixty Bishops, seven Mitred Abbots,eleven Monsignori, twenty-three Superiors of ReligiousOrders, seven Rectors of Seminaries, and ninety theologiansassisted at its deliberations. 20. In the Fall of 1885, the venerable CardinalMcCloskey peacefully expired; and the following SpringArchbishop Gibbons, of Baltimore, was created Cardinal bythe reigning 380 EXCELSIOR HISTORY. 21. The Catholic Centennial. — In November,1889, in Baltimore, was celebrated the first Centennial ofthe establishment of the hierarchy in this country. 22. At the same time, the first Catholic lay Congress mthe United States was assembled. It numbered about 1,500delegates from the various dioceses, men by birth and de=^cent of different nationalities, inchiding Indians and ne-groes. All joined in perfect harmony and with one com-mon purpose. The objects of the Congress, as set forth bv Henry Brownson,were ; a closer union of all the members of the Catholic body in thiscountry ; an increased activity on the part of the laity in aid of theclergy in religious work; a declaration of their views on the impor-tant questions of the hour; and the assistance and relief of the poorerclasses of society. 23.
