The owners had been frightenedaway, but, as I stood quietly, they would emergefrom the open water as a convenient place for moreextended observation, take a look at me, and thendive. I found that by standing back a little in thecanes they did not notice me so much, and, some-what reassured, would promenade across the park,back and forth. Now and then, a small group ofthe Eared Grebes would swim out from the reeds,gaze around, and paddle across the opening. Oneof these Grebes brought out a chick for a little one was under the parents wing, only itshead sticking out, seeiningly having a fine one of the great Western Grebes would breakwater, and swim with only its long slender whiteneck out, and the merest suggestion o± a back, look-ing more like a water-snake than a bird.
