Palace of the Institute, or of the Fine Arts


The view taken in 1828, shows the Palace of the Institute, or of the Fine Arts. It was known as the College Mazarin designed by Levau and architects Lambert and d’Orbay. Cardinal Mazarin was interred here under a sarcophagus of black marble constructed by Coyzevous but this was removed during the Revolution to the Musée des Monumens Français. The Institute encompassed the former academies, the French Academy, Inscriptions, Belles Lettres, Sciences, Fine Arts. The image was drawn by T T Bury under the direction of A Pugin and engraved by Fenner Sears and Co
