Lherzolite rock. Polarised light micrograph of lherzolite, an ultrabasic (low silica content) rock possibly of mantle origin. The dense crystalline structure is due to the rock originating from deep within the Earth. The mix consists of olivine, clinopyroxenes, orthopyroxenes, garnet, and various other minerals. This image has been obtained using cross-polarised light (or 'crossed nichols').
