Respiratory physiology research. Italian physician Dr Capezzuoli demonstrating the use of the Morelli combination mouthpiece and nosepiece. This apparatus was used to measure respiration when studying nutrition. It had been found that respiration analysis alone allowed study of metabolism rates, but airtight breathing masks that did not impede the test subject's breathing were needed, hence designs such as the Morelli mask shown here. Photographed in Florence, Italy, in around 1913, this image was published in 'Reports of Visits to Foreign Laboratories' (volume 3, 1913-16) by US nutritionist Francis Gano Benedict (1870-1957).
