Buddha's head encased in the roots of a Banyan tree at the Wat Phra Mahathat temple, Ayutthaya Thailand


From the 14c Ayutthaya was the capital of an independent kingdom until it was lay waste by the Burmese in 1767. Today it is a UNESCO Heritage site. Ayutthaya is easily reached within a day trip from Bangkok some 53miles (85 kms) north of capital with most temples open from 8am to 5pm.
