SÅNTA RITA - SUMAI (June 1, 2022) - Joint Region Marianas Chief-of-Staff Capt. Rick Kratzer, Naval Base (NBG) Commanding Officer Capt. Michael Luckett, and Lt. Governor Josh Tenorio alongside government of Guam officials and contractors ceremoniously dug the first shovel of dirt during a ground breaking ceremony for the multimillion dollar reconstruction of Route 5, June 1. The $ project is funded by the Federal Highway Administration with an estimated contract time of 425 days. Route 5, the road leading to the NBG Ordnance Annex more commonly known as the Naval Magazine, is considered a Defense Access Road. The project involves the rehabilitation and widening of the road beginning at the Route 2A and Route 5 intersection to Route 12 and past Route 17, Cross Island Road. A minimum of two 11-foot lanes, with a 4-foot paved shoulder and 2-foot graded shoulder will be constructed, according to a release. The pavement structure will be constructed with 1-inch dense-graded friction course, 5-inch hot asphalt concrete pavement over 12-inch aggregate base. The release further states, a left turn lane will be provided at the entrances to the Pay-less Market and a double turn lane and a right turn pocket will be provided at the entrances to the Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command facilities at Bldg. 4175. Minor drainage culverts will also be installed.
