Air Force Maj. Gen. Evan Pettus, 12th Air Force (Air Forces Southern) commander, speaks at the unit’s building rededication at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Arizona, July 22. The building is named in honor of 1st Lt. Raymond Knight, a Army Air Forces P-47 Thunderbolt pilot awarded the Medal of Honor for two days of heroic flying in Italy’s Po Valley in World War II, destroying 14 grounded enemy aircraft and leading attacks that wrecked 10 others before being hit by ground fire and dying in a crash while returning to base.
