Louis-Antoine de Bougainville (1729-1811). 1874 artwork of the French navigator and military commander Louis-Antoine, comet de Bougainville. Bougainville took part in the French and Indian War against Britain. He later gained fame for his expeditions, the first recorded settlement on the Falkland Islands and his voyages into the Pacific Ocean.
