The height above water-levelat the starting point is meters, and that of the upperend of the road is meters, so that the vertical riseis meters. The radius of the curye is 250 meters, and the maximum grade is per cent. Leaving the starting point, the line crosses the PublicGarden from the Croix-Paquet station ; this station faceson an entrance court, which is in an excavation of 43meters in length, bounded partly by a retaining wall andpartly by an earth-bank, the slopes being sodded andplanted with trees, in order not to interfere with the gen-eral appearance of the Public Garden. Just beyond thestation foot passengers can cross the track on a handsomeiron bridge. The line then passes at once into a tunnel of arched sec-tion, 7 meters in width at the springing of the arch and. Sto 263 meters in horizontal length. The floor or bottom ofthe tunnel is an arc of a circle 7 meters radius. Thistunnel passes under several streets, and the line finallyleaves it and returns to the open air on private the upper portal of the tunnel it is in an open cut, sometimes with retaining walls and sometimes with abank having a slope of 45. The necessity of having the terminal station facing onthe Boulevard Croix-Rousse embodies the necessity of acurve of 250 radius, joining the two tangents. The road is constructed for two tracks, but, in order todiminish as much as possible the expense, and also to re-duce the space taken from the Public Garden, the twotracks are laid close together, as has been done on thecable railroad at Glion, in Switzerland, where the intervalbetween the two tracks is only meter. Here thisinterval has been suppressed altogether, except for a dis- x8 THE RAILROAD AND [January, 1889. tance of about 38 meters at the Croix-Paquet station a
