The Marines are in New York to support humanitarian operations with the Federal Emergency Management Agency in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. The work of the Marines is being directed by FEMA in coordination with the Army Corps of Engineers and Army National Guard. Everything is aimed at helping residents of the greater New York City area return to normalcy as soon as possible. The Navy-Marine Corps team is well-equipped to respond to national disasters when required, through the coordination of Northern Command. While the military plays an important role in disaster response, all our efforts are in support of FEMA first and foremost, who coordinate closely with state and local officials.
