Building the Manhattan Bridge. Workers during the construction of the Manhattan Bridge, New York City, USA, which spans the East River to connect Lower Manhattan with Brooklyn. This bridge was designed by Leon Moisseiff and opened to traffic on 21st December 1909. As the first suspension bridge to employ Josef Melan's deflection theory for the stiffening of its deck, it is considered to be the forerunner of modern suspension bridges.
