Genetic code research. US geneticist Joseph Yourno (born 1936) of Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL), New York, USA, with a blackboard showing his research. Yourno and his colleagues worked on the genetic code that controls the production of proteins by cellular mechanisms. The blackboard shows frameshifts and transcription from DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) to mRNA (messenger ribonucleic acid). Also shown are polypeptide protein chains and RNA nucleotide triplets (codons) for amino acids such as UUU (phenylalanine), UCA (serine) and GGA (glycine). Photographed circa 1973.
