It heads up remarkably hard and solid; having few outside leaves the plants can be set close together. The heads are of excel- lent quality and of large size for so early a cabbage. This variety has become a popular market Charleston, or Large Wakefield Cabbage It is about a week later than Wakefield, the heads are nearly one-third larger and very sol- id. It is very compact in growth and so can be planted more close than most varieties. One great advantage with this sort is that it does not burst open when ripe. This sort is grown largely in the south and around large cities for shipping long distances on account of its good keeping qualities, and is one of the best large early sorts on the market.
