Triumphs and wonders of the 19th century, the true mirror of a phenomenal era, a volume of original, entertaining and instructive historic and descriptive writings, showing the many and marvellous achievements which distinguish an hundred years of material, intellectual, social and moral progress .. . 14 TRIUMPHS AND WONDERS OF THE XIXth CENTURY With this admirable machine for handling the straw, it seemed as thoughperfection had been reached, and that there was now practically nothingmore to be desired. But it was not long until the farmer found that withthe delivery of six tons of straw per hour it was heavy work for six men tobuild the stack, and that it was the most disagreeable work about the ma-chine because of the dust. About 1890, some inventive genius produced the blower to take the place of the stacker. This is a long jointed tube, somesixteen or eighteen inches in diameter, mounted at the rear of the cylinderthrough which the straw is forced by compressed air which is furnished bythe machine. It can be raised or lowered, turned to the right or to the left,so as to deliver the straw at any desired point on the stack. It is managedby a man standing on top of the separator near the rear end, does awayentirely with any hands on the stack, and thus reduces the force about six. ^?HJlT^o-CfQ. DISK H Alt HOW. men. Some other improvements which have been added are the putting ofknives in the cylinder to cut the bands, thus saving one or two hands, foroften it was necessary to have a man on each side for cutting the bands whenthe wheat was dry and the work was done with the greatest rapidity. Thena revolving platform, called a self-feeder, was added in front of the cylinder,on which platform the bundles could be thrown from a wagon standing oneach side, and be carried automatically and dumped into the cylinder, doingaway with the man who formerly fed the bundles to the machine. To somemachines an automatic weigher has been attached, which does away with aman for me
