Central part of the C17th Renaissance-style painted timber ceiling of St Mary's Church, Grandtully, Perthshire, Scotland, UK. The church was built for Alexander Stewart of Grandtully Castle around 1533. It was extended & the timber ceiling installed around 1636 by Sir William Stewart of Grandtully Castle & his wife Dame Agnes Moncrieffe. The central panel features a Resurrection scene (Last Judgement) with the dead summoned from their graves by two angels with trumpets. A dying man in a canopied bed is claimed by a skeletal figure of Death holding an arrow. The scene is framed by vine-draped pillars supporting a pediment. Roundels, linked by decorative strap work, contain saints, proverbs, biblical illustrations & Stewart family coats of arms: The Laird of Graintvilie, Dam Agneis, Earle of Athol, Duik of Lennox. The background is full of birds, fruits, flowers & angels.
