A ferocious god at the entrance to the Huatang Temple. TheHuating Temple (Huating Si), also known as the “Temple of 1000 Gods” was built in the 11th century and used to be a county temple of the Nanzhao Kingdom. Rebuilt in 14th century, it continued to grow and later became the largest Buddhist complex in Kunming. The main temple contains a trinity of gilded lacquer Buddhas seated on lotus thrones. It is characterized by blue hair and an august gesture. Compared with the serious Buddha, the 1000 luohan statues on the sidewalls, appear frivolous and easygoing. The Huating Temple is located in the Western Hills deep in a forest near Kunming, the capitol of Yunnan Province in China
