(Philip Paul) Bliss (1838-1876) was an American hymn writer, composer, conductor and Gospel singer who wrote the words and music for such hymns as "Almost Persuaded," "Hallelujah, What a Saviour!," and "Let the Lower Lights Be Burning," among many others. He also wrote the music for Horatio Spafford's hymn "It Is Well with My Soul." Bliss was associated with the famous evangelists Moody and Major Daniel Webster Whittle in Chicago. On December 29, 1876, Bliss (age 37) and his wife, Lucy, died in the Ashtabula Bridge Disaster when a train trestle bridge collapsed. (Image c1872)
