ALexander Kerdinsky working on sketches to be installed in the Amber room


Alexander Kedrinsky chief architect of the restoration project working on the sketches of the last panels to be installed in the Amber Room in the Catherine the Great s Palace in Tsarskoye Selo outside St Petersburg King Friederich Wilhelm I of Prussia presented the Amber Room panels to Peter the Great in 1717 and they were displayed in this palace until 1941 when German troops looted it and moved it to Konigsberg After a quarter century of intricate restoration of carvings and inlaid designs the Amber room will be unveiled to the world leaders during celebrations of the 300th anniversary of St Petersburg and the end of May 2003
