Gallipoli (pop: 22,000) lies on the Ionian Sea, in the Gulf of Taranto, on the west coast of the Salentina Peninsula, in the province of Lecce, the region of Puglia, also known as the heel of Italy. Gallipoli’s historic Centro Storico is set on a limestone island connected to the mainland by the 16th-century bridge, Ponte Citta’Vecchia, guarded by a castle built by Charles I of Anjou. Adjacent is the town’s beach, La Puritate. Currently touted by tourism executives as “The Ionian Pearl”, Gallipolis, in ancient Greek, translates to “beautiful city”. This describes the Old Town, rather than the modern suburb of Galatone which stretches inland from the bridge and includes a skyscraper on the main street of Corsa Roma, between the two neighbourhoods of Scirocco and Tramontana. The economy depends on tourism and fishing. The nearest airports are Brindisi (88km) and Bari (200km).
